More than 150 residents of East Stour are protesting over Dorset CC's plan to close the A30 for two months to comply with a European directive, the Daily Mail reported (Aug 28, p24).

Locals are angry that businesses that rely on the busy road's traffic such as service stations will be forced into bankruptcy.

Dorset is closing the A30 to comply with EU directive 83/3 which requires all bridges on classified roads to be strong enough to bear 40-tonne lorries by 1999.
