A Dorset couple who had been warned that they would lose their foster child if they didn't give up smoking can continue, ruled a fostering panel.

The Daily Mail (July 20, p17) and The Times (July 20, p9) reported that Dorset CC social services had warned the foster parents to give up smoking if they wanted to keep the child full time.

Dorset director of social services Robin SeQueira told the Daily Mail: 'We would prefer foster parents looking after young children with respiratory problems not to smoke.

'The panel recognised that the foster parents are offering warmth and care for a very needy child.'
