Martin Doughty, chair of the Association of National Park Authorities and Labour leader of Derbyshire CC, has been appointed to the board of the new Countryside Agency.

The agency will be formed by the merger of the Countryside Commission and parts of the Rural Development Commission.

Environment minister Michael Meacher announced earlier this month that the agency's first deputy chair will be Calderdale MBC leader Pam Warhurst.

Mr Doughty and Ms Warhurst will be joined by two other board members currently involved in local government.

Pendle BC development director Janet Bradbury and Somerset CC member Catherine Mack were among the 10 board members announced this week.

The members, who have been appointed for between one and three years, will receive almost£6,000 a year for one to two days a month.
