'Senior Downing Street sources' have ruled out Glenda Jackson standing for London's mayor against Ken Livingstone, reports The Daily Telegraph (p6).

Ms Jackson is described by the sources as being 'too wooden' and perhaps too old to take on Mr Livingstone, who the Labour leadership fear as a left-wing threat. It is also believed that Margaret Hodge may have ruled herself out because she feels her past career as leader of Islington LBC may affect the party's chances in the race.

Alternative challengers to Mr Livingstone include health secretary Frank Dobson, who is threatened by a cabinet re-shuffle; TV presenter Trevor Phillips; and environment minister Nick Raynsford.
