A new report today reveals that drivers heading for Wales from Avon are avoiding the Severn Bridge in a bid to save paying the toll, reports the Western Mail (p3).

For Gloucestershire CC it reveals a 59% increase in traffic avoiding the gateway to Wales by diverting along a stretch of A-road.

Gloucestershire's environment committee chair Dr John Cordwell said the figures were horrific. The cost of repairs to roads in Gloucestershire and Gwent used for diversions from the bridge would soar, he warned, the paper says. The county will be seeking funds from the Department of Transport to pay for the repairs, he added.
