Around 650 jobs will be lost next year when Leicestershire CC's building cleaning direct service organisation is forced to close, The Independent reports (p34).

But although many DSOs are struggling, others may have a new lease of life as a safety net when private contractors fail, the paper says.

Leicestershire CC is one of 17 authorities which will have to retender or restructure their in house contractors after the DoE last week announced action against loss making DSOs. The Independent also reports on problems with Bedfordshire CC's highways and sewerage DSO.

Ealing LBC and Kerrier DC have been told to retender their sports and leisure contracts. But private sector leisure contractors are also in trouble, the Independent reports.

Contemporary Leisure, one of the largest contractors to local authorities, has asked several councils to transfer contracts to another company, City Centre Leisure. But Hillingdon LBC has decided instead to re-establish its DSO to take back its leisure contract, the paper reports.
