Dudley MBC last night voted to support plans for a £100m extension of the Merry Hill shopping centre, reports The Birmingham Post (p1).

Opposition has come from environmentalists and other Midland authorities.

Council leader Fred Hunt said the authority's support was subject to an £8m contribution from the shopping centre's owners - Chelsfield plc - to improving local road and rail transport and town centre improvements in Dudley and Stourbridge.

He told the meeting: 'Let us not stick out heads in the sand. We are going to have another 2,500 jobs if this goes through.'
