The convener of Dumfries and Galloway Council has appeared in court accused of a series of expenses frauds totalling more than£1,400.

The Scotsman (22 April, p6) reported that Allan Baldwick made no plea or declaration and was remanded on bail.

During his appearance in private at Dumfries sheriff court, it was alleged that he made 13 false claims on a business visa account for sums ranging from£8.80 to£478.05 over two years ending December 1997.

When it was revealed in January last year that his expenses were being investigated by police, Mr Baldwick stood down voluntarily from official duties. Although this action has not been regarded as a resignation.
