A Labour Dumfries and Galloway councillor has had the whip removed after being found guilty in court of fraudulently scheming to get tenancy of a council house for her daughter and son-in-law, the Glasgow Herald (16 Oct p3) reported.

Sheila Howat pleaded guilty to the charges in Dumfries sheriff's court.

Following a specially convened meeting of the council's Labour group, its leader Tommy Sloan said, 'In view of councillor Howat's admission of an offence in court today, and in line with Labour party policy on standards, we have tonight removed the whip from her.'

There have been widespread calls for her resignation.
