Durham CC is to offer secondary school children free fish oil supplements in the months leading up to their GCSEs.

Madeleine Portwood, educational psychologist at Durham CC, told BBC Radio Four's Today programme the council was sure this would improve pupils' performance. Durham has already tested fish oil supplements among primary school children.

'Durham has been at the forefront of clinically controlled research in our primary schools,' she said. 'It showed conclusively that the children taking active treatment have significant improvements in learning and concentration.

She said the programme for secondary school pupils was not a clinical trial: 'It's implementing what we already know in an attempt to make a real difference to children.'
