With one driver dead from exposure to cold and others causing chaos on northern roads Durham county council's environmental director David Newbigginn has criticised drivers for ignoring road closed signs during blizzards, the Nrothern Echo reports (p1).

Mr Newbiggin said drivers ignored road closed signs on a dual carriageway and continued going before driving back down the overtaking lane of the carriageway they had just gone up.
