The Tidy Britain Group has named Durham as the top among 58 popular destinations in Britain, reported the Northern Echo (January 5, p1).

The town achieved good marks for lack of litter and absence of graffiti and vandalism.

Durham mayor Neil Griffin told the paper: 'I think we have to acknowledge the efforts of the city council workforce to keep the place so tidy.'
