Easington DC was forced to send out 2,000 new notice of polling cards to registered voters after the first batch told them they had just three hours in which to cast their vote.

The cards told residents they could vote in yesterday's general election between 7pm and 10pm. The booths actually opened at 7am. The error was due to poor proofreading by the legal services department.

A spokesman said: 'It's a bit embarrassing because we are in Tony Blair's constituency.'
