Easington DC has decided to give its members a 33% rise in allowances following an independent review, reports The Journal.

The authority will spend an extra£72,000 on members' pay as their duties are stepped up. Council leader Alan Napier will get a rise of nearly£14,000, while the average backbench member will see their allowance go from£3,680 to£4,900.

Paul Wilding, executive director of corporate resources, said the bigger allowances rewarded members for extra work. 'There is a need to provide financial rewards for the time done over and above financial duties,' he added.
