Environment secretary and Suffolk Coastal MP John Gummer has attacked his local councils, describing Suffolk CC as inefficient and Ipswich BC as one of the 'worst councils in Britain' and a 'terrible monument'.

The MPs remarks, reported in the East Anglian Daily Times (p1) were greeted with astonishment from councillors.

Ipswich BC leader David Ball said: 'John Gummer has finally flipped his mind. It's the demented outpourings of a desperate government.'

Suffolk CC leader Chris Mole said that Mr Gummer knew that his party would be fighting an 'uphill struggle' in the May elections and had deliberately set out to fight a dirty campaign.
