The defecit in the budget of East Ayrshire Council's commercial operations department is likely to be much larger than first thought, reports The Times (p2).

The council is expected to announce a£3.8m shortfall today and will be further embarrassed by separate allegations that two senior councillors ordered a council officer to buy them drinks during a conference in 1996 and claim them back on expenses.

When the official, Charlie McIvor, refused he was allegedly challenged to a fight and threatened with his job.

Labour's chief whip at East Ayrshire announced that if the allegations were substantiated, the councillors would be dealt with severely.
