East Dunbartonshire council is considering the establishment of centres of excellence to cater for the needs of gifted and more able pupils, reports The Herald (p2).

Cllr Ron McInally, convener of the council's education committee, said the authority already provided extensive support for pupils with learning difficulties but that 'not much' had been done for those at the other end of the spectrum.

'I would see them more as centres of specialisation rather than centres of excellence.

'I do not see this as a threat to comprehensive education, rather it is filling in the gaps in the system,' Mr McInally told the paper.
