An East Hertfordshire couple are the first in the country to win an appeal to have their council tax put up rather than down, reports the Daily Mail (p23).

The couple were protesting that their house had been valued at £20,000 less than what they thought it was worth and so the District council agreed to move it up from band f to band g.

The council tax bill has now risen from £768.40 to £886.62.
