East Riding of Yorkshire Council has spent o650 on a set of curtains to hang from tables in the council chamber because male members complained the view of their female colleagues' legs was distracting.

Twenty out of the 67 East Riding members are female. Liberal Democrat Dave Ireland said he had first mentioned his concerns about the view from his seat nine months ago.

'It wasn't a complaint,' he said. 'It was a serious request made for the comfort of the members.

'Some of our meetings go on for as long as seven hours and - I don't know, I'm assuming - it must be difficult for the ladies in skirts to sit modestly for that long. Of course, some of them have got nice legs as well.

'After talking with my wife about whether I should make the suggestion of a curtain, we decided I should.'
