Eastbourne BC chief executive Sari Conway has been suspended on full pay pending an inquiry into unspecified allegations about her professional conduct.
A council statement said: 'Eastbourne BC is aware of speculation concerning the nature of its inquiry into matters concerning chief executive Sari Conway. The authority wants to make it absolutely clear that this inquiry is solely concerned with matters relating to council business.'
The corporate management team will be jointly responsible for running the council in her absence.
Ms Conway was previously director of education at Bradford MDC. Her contract there was terminated in 1994 prematurely. She received an out-of-court settlement of about£225,000 from the council after serving a High Court writ for breach of contract and threatening to take Bradford to a tribunal for sex discrimination.
