Draft European Commission employment guidelines should specifically mention the role of local government, says the Committee of the Regions.

Vice president Ken Bodfish, who is also deputy leader of Brighton and Hove Council, told the European parliament committee on employment and social affairs that local authorities are uniquely placed to play a proactive part in job creation by bringing together players at a European, national, regional and local level.

He urged the committee to amend the employment guidelines for 2000 to acknowledge this role. Previously Guideline 12 made explicit reference to local authorities but the new draft only refers generally to local and regional partners.
