Protesters who built an 'eco-village' on land owned by the brewer Guinness have been evicted after occupying the site in Wandsworth for five-and-a-half months, the Independent reports (p2).

Bailiffs removed 50 protesters, who were opposed to Guinness' plans to develop a Safeway supermarket on the 13-acre riverside site.

A planning inquiry into the planning dispute is expected to conclude by the end of the year. Wandsworth LBC said it welcomed the evictions, although it opposes the supermarket plan.
