Economy adds to CSR gloom

  • Comment
The economic downturn has further undermined councillors’ satisfaction with the three-year settlement outlined in the 2007 comprehensive spending review.

The latest LGC/ ComRes councillors survey of almost 500 councillors shows 63% of members less positive about their settlement nearly a year after the CSR was announced.

Only 10% feel more positive despite a series of economic crises such as the nationalisation of Northern Rock placing unprecedented demand on public finances.

Only Labour councillors are more likely to view last year’s settlement in a better light, with 28% saying they feel more positive compared to 26% less.
