Mary Hartnoll, director of social work at Glasgow City Council, who has come under attack for comments she wrote in a report about the relative dangers of ecstasy tablets, has been defended by senior people at the authority, The Times reports (p2).

'I am surprised and disappointed that one sentence in an internal memo has been so widely misinterpreted and taken out of context,' Ms Hartnoll said.
