The lord provosts of Edinburgh and Glasgow have pledged to bury the hatchet in favour of establishing joint initiatives to promote the interests of the two cities.

Joint working parties will be set up to explore areas of common interest. One of the first will look into the feasibility of a Scottish bid to host the Olympics in 2008 or 2012.

The decision to bury historic rivalries was taken at a meeting between provosts Eric Milligan of Edinburgh and Pat Lally of Glasgow, plus their chief executives.
