The Chief Executive of Edinburgh City Council, Paul Lowenberg, has lost a vote of no confidence in a private ballot of members held today.

A spokesperson for the council said a sub committee of party group leaders was being set up chaired by the Lord Provost to consider 'possible alternatives' in view of the result.

In May a move by the Lord Provost, Norman Irons, to sack failed by 11 votes at a council meeting.
