Edinburgh City Council was due to discuss yesterday the appointment of an acting head of paid services following the departure of Paul Lowenberg whose contract was terminated late last year (LGC, 7 January).

The council will also consider whether to recruit a permanent replacement or to make an interim appointment or a secondment. Mr Lowenberg left after the council passed a vote of no confidence in him in December.

The motion was not supported by the Labour group leadership but eight Labour group members voted with the Conservatives and Scottish National Party members. Another abstained. The nine members this week succeeded in winning an interim interdict in the court of sessions, preventing the leadership from disciplining them for defying the Labour whip.
