Sex shops in Edinburgh have been hit by a 100% licence fee increase to help to pay for council staff to investigate complaints against them, reported The Scotsman (26 Feb, p8).
The council's licensing committee have approved the increase, which means the cost leaps from£500 to£1,000. Phil Atridge, the committee convener, said the cost of checking out complaints had to be reflected in the fee and not be passed on to the public in the form of a council tax surcharge.
He said the licence price increase was the first for three years, adding that routine checks, such as making sure fire exits were unblocked and that the premises were fulfilling other licensing conditions, had to be priced.
