Editor's new job at Audit Commission

  • Comment
The Audit Commission has named David Walker, currently editor of The Guardian’s public sector monthly Public, as its managing director of communications and public reporting.

He leads a team of 45 and reports to the commission’s chief executive Steve Bundred. As part of his contract he is bound by a confidentiality clause that prevents him from disclosing confidential commission information.

Mr Walker replaces Jenny Grey, who left in July to join the Cabinet Office as director of communications. Consultant Marina Pirotta is acting managing director until Mr Walker starts in October.

He said: “It's a body I have known and admired since its birth and I look forward to making a contribution to the introduction of comprehensive area assessment and piquing the public's interest in a new way of judging how services are delivered locally.”

Mr Walker, who is a regular presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Analysis programme, has published a raft of books including Public Relations in Local Government and Has Labour Delivered?

Mr Bundred said Mr Walker brought with him a ‘wealth of experience as an analyst and commentator on the public sector’.

He added: “His insight and expertise as a communicator, academic, broadcaster and writer will be a huge asset to the commission.’
