The island of Eigg was not a toy for a rich person to play with, said Highland Council land and environment chairman Dr Michael Foxley, reports The Scotsman (p4).

The council is partnering the islanders in their efforts to raise cash to buy the island. Islanders set a target to raise £800,000 in a worldwide public appeal.

Highland policy director Nick Reiter said he didn't think anyone would be foolish enough to buy the island after seeing the local movement against private ownership.
