Community care is failing many elderly people says Age Concern, BBC Radio Four's Today programme reported this morning.

The charity's director Sally Greengross told the programme Age Concern has found around the country that elderly people are waiting up to a year for assessments or services they need.

At its annual conference today Age Concern will list changes to improve the system.

Community care is not just about health and social services, she said, and a 'seamless service' should also take into account housing, transport, leisure and education.

Age Concern wants the government to set up an inter-departmental committee to ensure there is proper co-ordination between services int he delivery of customer care.
