Unison has protested to the government over the barring of local government workers from standing for the Scottish parliament, reports The Scotsman (p6).

The Scottish Office has confirmed that local government workers earning above£25,000 a year would have to resign from their posts if they sought nomination to the parliament.

Unison said the government risked being taken to the European Court of European Rights if the rule is not changed. A Scottish Office spokesman said the government was planning to release a consulation paper on general political activity among council workers, but the rule would remain for the forthcoming elections.
