The principal registration officer at Islington LBC has been suspended as part of a council investigation into local elections held in May, reports the Highbury & Islington Express (p1).

Vi Donovan has been told to stay away from her desk while Jane Ramsey, head of law at the council, conducts the inquiry.

The probe is believed to centre around the recruitment and payment of staff that manned 114 polling stations across the borough.

Talal Karim, deputy leader of the council, said: 'Any officer who breaches the terms and conditions will be dealt with in accordance with our staffing code.'
