Labour Party leader Tony Blair said today at the launch of the party's local election campaign, in Leeds:

'Britain is working because of the hard work of the British people and the tough decisions we as a country have taken.

Labour has put Britain's long-term economic stability first. From Tory boom and bust to prosperity and social justice.

This platform of stability has allowed us to make great progress towards achieving our goal of social justice. We have put in place record investment in the NHS; standards have risen in our schools.

Don't let the Tories wreck it again. The Conservative Party under Michael Howard is pledged to an agenda of cuts, charges and privatisation that is more extreme than ever.

They are committed to an immediate£18bn cut to public services and the privatisation of health and education.

They will slash£2.4bn from the local government grant - a cut that will wreck the regeneration of our communities and harm the services that matter most to local people.

The Tories also deliver higher council tax - on average Tory councils cost£200 a year per dwelling more than Labour councils.

Across the country Labour councils are providing high quality public services, working in partnership with their communities to build cleaner, greener, safer neighbourhoods of which we can all be proud.

Labour is working with the people of Britain to put economic stability and social justice first - don't let the Tories wreck it again. Vote Labour.'

Labour councils are working in partnership with our Labour government to tackle the issues that matter to local people: getting tougher on anti-social behaviour; raising standards in local schools; making neighbourhoods cleaner, greener and safer.

Only Labour will protect and invest in local services. Contrast that with the Tories - their agenda of cuts, charges and privatisation will decimate local services.

Pa rty chair Ian McCartney said of the 10 June elections: 'Our message is: Britain is working. Don't let the Tories wreck it again.'
