According to reports in The Observer(p2), figures from leading unions, which are essential to the Labour party's chances of putting on a good performance at next month's European and local elections, said they were disillusioned with the direction of the government and that the prime minister was personally 'under threat'.

The move comes as the Commons leader, Peter Hain, admitted for the first time that Labour supporters were likely to stay away from the polls on 10 June because of anger about the Iraq conflict.
