The first road test of its kind for electric vehicles will be taking place in Oxford over the next two days, reports BBC Oxford.

Twenty electric cars, vans and bicycles will be circling the city along with the normal daily traffic. At the end of the exercise the most energy-efficient vehicles will be awarded prizes.

The event is being organised by Oxford City Council and City Citelec, the association of European towns and cities with an interest in electric vehicles. It coincides with an international conference on urban air quality.

Oxford City Council and Southern Electric have recently agreed to extend their sponsorship of four electric buses on city routes for a further two years.

There has been a call for the changeover of all city council vehicles to electric or other low-pollution vehicles when vehicles are replaced. The Liberal Democrats urge this in a motion which will be debated in November.
