The East Midlands Development Agency has called for£12m to help the region recover from clothing and textile factory closures.

The closures, announced last week by Coats Viyella, mean a minimum of 1,900 job losses, the agency claims. It says the extra funding would be spent on regeneration, inward investment and re-training.

EMDA chairman Derek Mapp has written to trade and industry secretary Stephen Byers to request the funds. Mr Mapp said: 'There is intense pressure on some manufacturing sectors in the East Midlands. We intend to work hard to ensure the businesses and individuals affected by these changes have the support they need.'
