Fire service employers are attempting to avert strike threats, reassuring fire staff they have nothing to fear over contract changes.

Employers' chair Lawrence Conlon said officers' pay would still be negotiated nationally, would still allow local variations, and be the same in every brigade.

Employers say they propose only modest changes, including the removal of 'unjustified provisions' such as reimbursed dental care.

The Fire Brigades Union has threatened to ballot for strike action, which members will vote on at their annual conference next month.
