The chief executive of the government created Empty Homes Agency has issued a denunciation of the policies of defence secretary Michael Portillo and environment secretary John Gummer, reports The Guardian (Society p9).

Bob Lawrence says the two ministers have reversed the policies of their predecessors, Michael Heseltine and Michael Howard, to provide low cost homes for the homeless. And he says the government has ignored its manifesto pledge to house more people on the waiting list in empty government properties.

Meanwhile, reports The Guardian, a meeting on government-owned empty properties is to be held with Michael Portillo in the near future. Paul Jenks, chair of housing at the Association of District Councils, has written in advance of the meeting claiming that the sale of MoD estates to the private sector will make the problem worse.
