A housing pressure group says that England's 830,000 empty homes cost the economy 'billions of pounds' every year.

The Financial Times (p6) reports that the Empty Homes Agency has attacked the government, which owns 17,000 of the homes, saying that many empty properties created a local hazard.

The agency says that only local authorities have managed to reduce the number of empty homes they own, from 120,000 in 1983, to 70,000 this year.
