Large numbers of long-term empty homes are to lose their exemption from council tax.

Local government minister Hilary Armstrong told MPs that from 1 April next year, any dwelling in England and Wales needing or undergoing repair work which has been exempt for more than a year will be subject to the standard 50% council tax attracted by other unoccupied dwellings.

Ms Armstrong said: 'Long-term empty properties create extra costs for councils.'
