Norfolk CC is due to consider a number of options after parents withdrew their children from a local primary school after a critical Ofsted report.

The Independent (p10) reports that all the parents of pupils at the school withdrew their children and sent them to other schools.

A Norfolk CC spokesman said that the school remains officially open even though there are no pupils or teachers, but that closure was an option.

On the same page, the paper reports that schools standards minister Stephen Byers is expected to announce literacy targets for every local authority today.

Mr Byers is due to tell the Bradford conference of local authority representatives and experts that every authority has agreed to challenging new targets to raise standards by 2002.
