The concept of the company car is about to be given the boot by Birmingham City Council.

Despite claims from transport minister Stephen Norris that public transport is used by thoroughly vile and odious creatures, the council has decided it would be more in tune with the zeitgeist if its 120 chief officers took the bus to work rather than sitting behind the wheel of a petrol-guzzling car.

At the moment the new era applies only to the director of transportation's post, appointed last year.

However, Birmingham is considering whether to extend the decision to all its chief officers.

The council is discussing whether to give out pay rises of around £4,000 in return for having the right to a free council car taken away.
