Culture secretary Chris Smith is believed to have decided to disband the English Tourist Board, according to The Financial Times (p10).

If this happens, the functions of the ETB, which currently receives a government grant of£9.7m, might be taken over by the British Tourist Authority, which promotes Britain to overseas tourists.

Another option the government may choose is to give the 10 regional boards responsibility to promote England domestically, possibly by encouraging them to form a Council of England to co-ordinate national policy.
