Baroness Young, head of the Environment Agency, welcomed the report in The

Guardian that the chancellor is considering increasing landfill tax.

The tax should be at least doubled, she told BBC Radio Four's Today

programme this morning. A heavier tax would persuade local authorities to

increase recycling schemes and make the recycling technology used in Europe

economic to introduce here, she said.

'The important thing is to ensure that the revenues raised by the tax are

immediately funnelled towards helping local authorities bring in these new

facilities for recycling and re-use,' Baroness Young said.
