The Guardian (p5) reports the reaction from Jonathan Bray, co-ordinator of Save Our Railways, to news that British rail fares are among the most expensive in the world.

'We welcome [deputy prime minister John Prescott's idea of a] strategic rail authority but we also think he should be providing protection for a far greater range of fares. We don't think he should introduce a blanket cut in fares as that might merely encourage people to commute longer distances with a detrimental environmental effect. But where there is a clear need to get cars off congested routes, fares should be cut to encourage people on to railways.'
