The future of a website which co-ordinates and supports training for local authority health and safety inspectors may be under threat unless local authorities are willing to fund it, according to Steven Sumner, health and safety consultant at the Employers' Organisation for local government (EO).

The website, which was developed by the University of Salford as part of a Health and Safety Executive sponsored research project, provides crucial support to authorities delivering the Health and Safety Executive and Local Authority Liaison Committee's (HELA) training strategy for local authority inspectors.

The website, for members of the project group only, provides a training library with courses, venues and feedback from participants and discussion forums.

As the research project comes to an end, the Employers' Organisation is exploring sources of future funding for the maintenance and development of the site. As part of this process, the EO is consulting all local authorities to see if they would be prepared to pay a subscription of up to£300.
