Barnet LBC's planning committee last night threw out plans for a Jewish 'eruv' in the area, the Times reports (p5). Supporters of the scheme may now appeal to the secretary of state.

There was heated debate over the plans for the eruv - a delineated area where orthodox Jews can move freely on the Sabbath - before the committee rejected them by 11 votes to seven.

Officers had recommended the eruv be approved.

David Schreiber, chairman of the United Synagogue eruv committee said there could now be an appeal to the DoE. 'We are confident that such an appeal will be dealt with on its planning merits and will succeed', he said.
