Essex CC's £135,000 Local Government Review campaign came under fire yesterday because it asks for comments after the deadline for consultation has passed, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (14 May, p11).

'Keeping Essex Strong' leaflets have been delivered to every house with full-page adverts in local newspapers. These encourage people to write to the Local Government Commission with their views, council's opinion that things should stay as they are.

But one member of the public who wrote in was told his views had been submitted too late. Alan Newman, a Liberal Democrat parish councillor but writing as an individual, asked Essex CC for an explanation. He said: 'I think it's a muddle. I'm getting fed up with these government departments just frittering money away.'
