More than a quarter of school buses in the Chelmsford area have been taken off the road after a crack down on safety, reported the East Anglian Daily Times (17 Oct, p5).
Since the Essex CC safety initiative began earlier this month, 76 vehicles have been tested. Of those 40 were found to be defective and 22 were issued with prohibition notices because they had defects too serious to allow them to be driven any further.
A council spokeswoman told the paper: 'Obviously the safety of schoolchildren and all people travelling in Essex is of paramount concern.
'At the moment no contracts have been withdrawn but any contractor who has been lax with vehicle maintenance should beware that contracts are likely to be withdrawn immediately.'
